My reading of the responsibilities and requirements of the two roles SRE_SE and SRE-SWE would indicate that the breakdown is pretty similar, though SEs at Google are probably a bit more technical. There’s a key difference to notice in the job requirements for the two roles. SEs are expected to have:
“Experience with Unix/Linux operating systems internals and administration (e.g., filesystems, inodes, system calls) or networking (e.g., TCP/IP, routing, network topologies and hardware, SDN).”
And instead of that, SWEs are expected to have:
“Experience with algorithms, data structures, complexity analysis and software design.”
